square off in a 10-round welterweight debut for both fighters in a fight that has excitement written all over it. The bout will be held in Alexander’s backyard at St. Louis’ own Scottrade Center, which in itself carries the biggest question with regards to this fight – Can Marcos Maidana win a decision in Alexander’s backyard?

Simply put, this scribe thinks the answer is ‘no.’ The last time we saw Alexander, in June 2011, he escaped the brutal power of another Argentinian, Lucas Matthysse, in what many deemed as a gift of a split decision victory. The location? The Family Arena in St. Charles, Missouri. And just two fights before, Alexander walked away with an airtight decision over Andriy Kotelnik in his own backyard, once again at the Scottrade Center.
To take nothing away from Alexander, whose lone loss is at the hands of the undefeated Timothy Bradley, one can’t help but see him as a fighter with an asterisk or two to his name. Which puts Marcos Maidana in a ‘must-win-by-KO’ scenario. No problem for him.
With a 31-2 record and 28 wins by KO, Maidana has hardly developed his reputation by racking up CompuBox stats. His crude, come forward style and brutal punching power, despite his slight frame, have led him to his status as a fan favorite – and as a fighter whose opponents rarely see the final bell.
So what is to be expected from this fight? On one hand you have Devon Alexander, who despite having just one loss on his record, enters this fight at a virtual career crossroads, without a clear, decisive victory in nearly four fights. On the other, you have Marcos Maidana, who has proven to be just outside his depth among the elite fighters in the sport, though always within a puncher’s chance at proving that assessment wrong. And what do you get when you pit a fleet-footed, fast-handed boxer and a violent brawler? Betting odds suggest the technician is the likely victor. Curiosity suggests it’s a toss-up.
Speaking just for myself – and not Armando – I have my gut telling me that Maidana wins this fight by late KO, but my head telling me that Alexander has an underrated heart and a hometown at his back – plus plenty to prove. PREDICTION: ALEXANDER BY MD.
